The US Geological Survey (USGS) stated that the earthquake struck near Oromiya, Ethiopia's largest and most populous region with nearly half a million people.
Similarly, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported the earthquake was shallow, with a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles).
Users on social media platform X expressed solidarity with those affected by the earthquake.
At the time of this report, there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
DAILY POST noted that the regions of Oromiya and Afar have been experiencing intense seismo-volcanic activity, forcing the evacuation of thousands and causing significant infrastructure damage since December.
In recent weeks, Afar and Oromiya have been shaken by numerous minor quakes following signs of a nearby volcano's imminent eruption earlier this year.
