Lionel Messi has been surpassed by Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior in the assist records for the UEFA Champions League knockout stages.
Vinicius achieved this by setting up Jude Bellingham in Real Madrid's 3-2 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday.
Manchester City took the lead with Erling Haaland's 19th-minute goal. Kylian Mbappe equalized for Real Madrid in the 60th minute, but Haaland scored again for City in the 80th minute from the penalty spot.
Six minutes later, Real Madrid equalized through Brahim Diaz. Vinicius then broke through the defense, lifted the ball over Ederson, and Bellingham scored into the open goal.
Vinicius' assist was his 13th in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing Lionel Messi's 12. He reached this milestone in just 50 games.
Despite this achievement, Vinicius is still far from matching Messi's total assist record in the tournament. Messi has 40 assists, placing him third in the all-time assists chart. Angel Di Maria is second with 41 assists, and Cristiano Ronaldo leads with 42 assists.
Manchester City will be hoping for a turnaround when they face Real Madrid in the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu.
